Day 1: Fly to Mekele and Explore the Tigray Rock-Hewn Churches
In the morning, you will board a
flight to Mekele, the capital of the Tigray region. Upon arrival, we will drive
to visit some of the most remarkable rock-hewn churches in the area, renowned
for their stunning architecture and breathtaking landscapes.
Our first stop will be the Abreha
We Atsbeha Rock Church, a masterpiece dating back to the 4th century. This
church is celebrated for its fine architecture and beautiful interior
paintings, which reflect the region’s deep spiritual heritage.
We will then proceed to visit Mariam
Korkor and Daniel Korkor, two of the most famous rock-hewn churches.
Not only are these churches known for their extraordinary location perched on
high cliffs, but also for their intricate interior designs and panoramic views
of the surrounding landscapes.
After a day of exploration, we will
drive to Hawzien for an overnight stay, where you can relax and enjoy
the serene ambiance of the region.
Day 2: Abune Yemata and Wukro Chirkos, Fly Back to Addis Ababa
After breakfast, we will embark on an adventure to visit Abune Yemata Guh,
one of the most famous and unique rock-hewn churches in Ethiopia, dating back
to the 6th century. The journey to Abune Yemata involves a thrilling climb,
which takes about one and a half hours. At the top, you will be rewarded with
stunning views and the opportunity to explore the church's interior, adorned
with ancient, well-preserved frescoes.
Following the visit to Abune Yemata,
we will stop for lunch before heading to Wukro Chirkos Church in the
town of Wukro. Wukro Chirkos is a monolithic church dedicated to Saint Cyricus
of Tarsus and is known for its cruciform design. Its significance lies not only
in its historical value but also in the fact that it was the first rock-hewn
church discovered by outsiders during the 1868 British Expedition to Abyssinia.
This church remains the most accessible rock-hewn church in the region, making
it an essential stop on our journey.
In the late afternoon, we will drive
back to Mekele to catch a flight to Addis Ababa, concluding our two-day journey
through the historic rock-hewn churches of Tigray.
